The Struggle
Makeen: (To audience). Uncertainly. Insecurity. Horror. This is Syria in 2015. We need to get out. We aren’t safe here.
Makeen: (Al público) Incertidumbre. Inseguridad. Horror. Ésto es Síria en el 2015. Necesitamos irnos. No estamos a salvo aquí.
Father: (Head in hands). We have no power and no food. My sons can’t go to school. We have to leave. We have to find our future somewhere else. We aren’t safe here.
Padre: (Con la cabeza entre las manos). No tenemos electricidad ni comida. Mis hijos no pueden ir a la escuela. Tenemos que irnos. Tenemos que encontrar nuestro futuro en otra parte. No estamos a salvo aquí.
Makeen: (To audience). We travelled to Lebanon but we had problems at the border.
Makeen: (Al público). Viajamos al Líbano pero tuvimos problemas en la frontera.
Lebanese Guard: Get away. You are not welcome here. You haven’t paid.
Policía libanés: Fuera! No sois bienvenidos aquí. No habéis pagado.
Makeen and Father are turned away. They approach another guard and pay a large bribe. They are allowed through.
Makeen y su padre son rechazados. Se aproximan a otro policía y pagan un gran soborno. Les permiten pasar.
Lebanese Guard: (Aggressively). Very well. You can pass. But be back in three days. You are only allowed to have a three day holiday. (Makeen and Father nod in agreement. They are frightened).
Policía libanés: (Agresivamente). Muy bien. Podéis pasar. Pero volved en tres días. Solo se os permite tener tres días de vacaciones. (Makeen y su padre asienten como signo de aceptación. Están asustados)
Father: Makeen. We have to leave Lebanon too. We must go to Jordan.
Padre: Makeen. También tenemos que dejar el Líbano. Debemos ir a Jordania.
Jordanian Guard: You are not welcome here. Get away. (More bribes).
Policía jordano: No sois bienvenidos aquí. Fuera! (Más sobornos).
Father: Makeen. We must go to Turkey but that is not where we will stay.
Padre: Makeen. Debemos ir a Turquía pero allí no es donde nos quedaremos.
Turkish Guard: You are welcome here but life will be hard.
Policía turco: Sois bienvenidos pero la vida será dura.
Father: Makeen, I insist. We must aim for Britain.
Padre: Makken, insisto. Debemos dirigirnos a Gran Bretaña.
Makeen: But it is so far away.
Makeen: Pero eso está muy lejos.
Father: Your brother will join us here soon.
Padre: Tu hermano se nos unirá pronto.
Brother arrives and they embrace.
Llega el hermano y se abrazan.
Brother: We must go to Izmir where we will travel by boat to Greece.
Hermano: Debemos ir a Izmir desde donde viajaremos en barco a Grecia.
Makeen: I heard that there are twenty people on boats made for ten.
Makeen: He oído que hay veinte personas en botes hechos para diez.
They arrive at the harbour. The boat is already crammed with people.
Llegan al puerto. El bote está a rebentar de gente.
Father: That boat is too crowded. There are fifty people on it. It’s only made for ten.
Padre: El bote está demasiado lleno. Hay cincuenta personas. Fue construido para diez.
Smuggler: (Aggressively) Get on the boat. We already have your money.
Contrabandista: (Agresivamente) Subid al bote! Ya tenemos vuestro dinero.
Turkish Policeman: Stop. You cannot board this boat. Come back, you.
Policía turco: Parad! No podéis subir a este bote. Vosotros, volved.
Eventually, they manage to get on the boat. The boat is leaking and the family have to bail water out to avoid sinking.
Finalmente, consiguen subir al bote. Entra agua en el bote y la familia tiene que sacar el agua para evitar que se hunda.
Makeen: I’m frightened. This boat is sinking.
Makeen: Tengo miedo. El bote se está hundiendo.
Brother: Keep bailing the water out.
Hermano: Continúa sacando agua.
Smuggler: (Aggressively). You must throw your bags overboard or we will sink. Do it now! (They throw their cases overboard).
Contrabandista: (Agresivamente). Debéis tirar vuestras bolsas por la borda o nos hundiremos. Hacedlo ahora! (Lanzan sus maletas por la borda)
The boat sinks and everyone has to swim. They reach the shore – helping each other.
El bote se hunde y todos tienen que nadar. Alcanzan la orilla – ayudnándose entre ellos.
Father: We are alive but we are not safe. Come on; we have to walk.
Padre: Estamos vivos pero no a salvo. Vamos, tenemos que caminar.
They are exhausted and walk for twenty miles.
Están agotados y caminan durante 30km.
Makeen: How much further? I cannot go much further.
Makeen: Cuánto queda? No puedo caminar más.
Brother: Come on, Makeen. Keep going. (They arrive at the police station).
Hermano: Vamos, Makeen. Sigue. (Llegan a la comisaría de policía)
Greek Policeman: (Sternly) We will deal with you tomorrow. You can sleep there.
Policía griego: (Muy serio) Ya decidiremos lo que hacemos con vosotros mañana. Podéis dormir aquí.
They are freezing cold and do not sleep.
Están congelados de frío y no duermen nada.
Makeen: We eventually reach Britain. I cannot believe we have made it here and we are all alive.
Pasa el tiempo …
Makeen: Finalmente, conseguimos llegar a Gran Bretaña. No puedo creer que hayamos llegado hasta aquí y estemos todos vivos.
Father: This is only the beginning. If we are to flourish, we must learn to speak English. We must read and work harder than anybody else.
Padre: Ésto es solo el principio. Si queremos prosperar, tenemos que aprender a hablar Inglés. Debemos leer y trabajar más duro que los demás.
Brother: Well, we’ve made it this far. We can do this.
Hermano: Bien, hemos llegado hasta aquí. Podemos hacerlo.
Makeen: I read everything I could find. I got better but it was so hard. I was very confused at school.
Makeen: Leí todo lo que podía encontrar. Mejoré mucho pero fué muy duro. Estaba muy confundido.
English student: (Talking quickly) Where are you from? Did you come on a boat? Did you come on a lorry? Is your house blown up?
Estudiante inglés: (Hablando deprisa) ¿De dónde eres? ¿Viniste en bote? ¿Viniste en un camión? ¿Volaron tu casa?
Makeen: I’m sorry. I do not understand.
Makeen: Lo siento. No te entiendo.
Makeen is sad but he is also determined. He reads more and more. Eventually he is able to speak to the other students.
Makeen está triste pero también determinado. Lee más y más. Finalmente, puede hablar con los otros estudiantes.
English student: Can you speak English now?
Estudiante inglés. ¿Ya puedes hablar inglés?
Makeen: Yes. I improve. My journey has been hard but I am trying.
Makeen: Sí. He mejorado. Mi viaje ha sido muy duro pero lo estoy intentando.
English student: Come to the cinema tonight. It will be fun. (They are friends and leave together).
Estudiante inglés: Ven al cine est noche. Será divertido. (Son amigos y marchan juntos)
Makeen: It is my final exam tomorrow. I have worked so hard for this.
Makeen: Mañana tengo mi último examen. He trabajado muy duro para ésto.
English student: You will be fine, Makeen. You have made so much progress.
Estudiante inglés: Lo harás bien, Makeen. Has mejorado mucho.
Teacher: Makeen, we are so proud of you.
Profesor: Makeen, estamos muy orgullosos de ti.
Father and brother: Makeen, we are so proud of you.
Padre y hermano: Makeen, estamos muy orgullosos de ti.
Makeen: We have stuck together and we have survived. We have struggled but it has been worth it. Nothing comes for free in this world but people are prepared to help us. Everybody, if you listen, if you practise, if you learn every day, then you give yourself a chance to succeed. I miss my home of Hama in Syria but I have a new home now.
Makeen: Nos hemos mantenido juntos y hemos sobrevivido. Hemos tenido que luchar mucho pero ha valido la pena. Nada es gratis en este mundo pero la gente está preparada para ayudarnos. Todos, si escuchas, si practicas, si aprendes cada día, entonces te darás la oportunidad de triunfar. Echo de menos mi casa de Hama en Siria pero ahora tengo un nuevo hogar.
English student: Yes. We’re pleased to have you here with us. Come on. Cinema or football? (They shake hands and leave the stage).
Estudiante inglés: Sí. Estamos encantados de tenerte aquí con nosotros. Vamos. Cine o fútbol? (Chocan las manos y dejan el escenario)
