Awad is a Kenyan man. He is twenty years old. In Kenya homosexual relationships are not recognised and there is no protection against discrimination or prejudice.
Awad ist ein 20jähriger Mann aus Kenia. In Kenia sind homosexuelle Beziehungen nicht anerkannt und niemand ist gegen Vorurteile und Diskriminierung geschützt.
Awad: (To audience/ zum Publikum) I am frightened. I am frightened because I cannot tell the truth. I have read newspapers, I have watched films and television programmes and I have surfed the internet. I know that in other countries, in other parts of the world, people who are like me can life safely and without fear of assault, abuse or rejection. My crime, in my country of Kenya, is to be a homosexual man.
Ich habe Angst. Ich habe Angst, weil ich nicht die Wahrheit sagen kann. Ich habe Zeitungen gelesen, Filme und Fernsehen geschaut und bin durchs Internet gesurft. Ich weiß, dass in anderen Ländern oder anderen Teilen der Erde, Menschen, die wie ich sind, sicher leben können. Ohne Angst vor Übergriffen, Missbrauch oder Zurückweisung. Mein Verbrechen, in meinem Heimatland Kenia, ist, dass ich ein homosexueller Mann bin.
If I stay here, it will cost me my life. Wenn ich hierbleibe, wird es mein Leben kosten.
Awad steps back. Awad’s family step forward.
Awad tritt einen Schritt zurück. Awads Familie tritt vor.
Awad’s father: (Shouting) I have no son. It is an abomination. It is ungodly. I have no son.
Awads Vater: (schreit) Ich habe keinen Sohn. Es ist abscheulich. Es ist gottlos. Ich habe keinen Sohn.
Awad’s brother: (Violently) I have no brother. If it comes back to this home then I will kill it.
Awads Bruder (heftig): Ich habe keinen Bruder. Wenn er nachhause kommt, werde ich ihn umbringen!
Awad’s mother: (Crying) He is sick and nobody can help him.
Awads Mutter: (weint) Er ist krank und niemand kann ihm helfen.
They step back. Awad steps forward.

Awad: I work with cars. I have saved money and I have my own flat. I stay quiet; I keep my head down. My family wanted me to marry and have children. I know I can never marry a woman.
Awad: Ich arbeite mit Autos. Ich habe Geld gespart und ein eigenes Appartement. Ich verhalte mich ruhig und unauffällig. Meine Familie möchte das ich heirate und Kinder bekomme. Aber ich weiß, dass ich niemals eine Frau heiraten könnte.
Awad steps back. His family step forward. Awad tritt einen Schritt zurück. Awads Familie tritt vor.
Awad’s brother: (Angrily) It was with another man. I saw it and I told you, father.
Awads Bruder: (wütend) Es war mit einem anderen Mann. Ich habe es gesehen und dir erzählt, Vater.
Awad’s father: (Fist clenched) This has brought disgrace to our family. This thing is not welcome in our house.
Awads Vater: (mit geballten Fäusten) Das hat Schande über unsere Familie gebracht. So ein Verhalten ist in unserem Haus nicht willkommen.
Awad’s mother: (Head in hands). Is there no solution, no way that he can change?
Awads Mutter: (Kopf in den Händen): Gibt es keine Lösung, keinen Weg, das zu ändern?
They step back. Awad steps forward. Sie treten zurück. Awad tritt nach vorn.
Awad: (Looks closely at the three members of his family). My father. My mother. My brother. I will always love you but I cannot live with you. If I do not leave Kenya, I know I will be killed. I know you will not protect me.
Awad:(schaut seine Familie ernst an). Vater! Mutter! Bruder! Ich werde euch immer lieben, aber ich kann nicht mit euch leben. Wenn ich Kenia nicht verlasse, weiß ich, dass ich getötet werde. Ich weiß, dass ihr mich nicht beschützen werdet.
I need you to know that I am not sorry for what I am. I am sorry for what Kenya is and what Kenya has made you.
Ich möchte, dass ihr wisst, dass ich nicht bereue der zu sein, der ich bin. Mir tut es leid, wie es in Kenia ist und was Kenia aus euch gemacht hat.
Awad leaves the stage, stopping once to look back. He shakes his head and turns away. Awad verlässt die Bühne und schaut sich einmal dabei um. Er schüttelt seinen Kopf und dreht sich weg.
Awad: I was able to travel to Warsaw. I lied and said I was on holiday. I escaped Kenya but my life did not become easy.
Awad: Ich konnte nach Warschau reisen. Ich habe gelogen und vorgegeben, dass ich im Urlaub sei. Ich bin aus Kenia geflüchtet, aber mein Leben ist nicht leichter geworden.
Customs Official: Why have you come to Amsterdam?
Grenzbeamter: Warum sind Sie nach Amsterdam gekommen?
Awad: I would like to claim asylum. Please. I cannot return to Kenya. I am a homosexual man and I will be beaten and killed if I return. Please.
Awad: Ich möchte Asyl beantragen. Ich kann nicht nach Kenia zurück. Ich bin homosexuell und laufe dort Gefahr geschlagen und getötet zu werden, wenn ich zurückkehre. BITTE!
Customs Official: (Coldly) You will be held with others like you. A judge will decide whether you can stay or whether you must return.
Grenzbeamter:(abweisend, kalt): Sie werden solange festgehalten, zusammen mit anderen wie Sie, bis ein Richter darüber entscheidet, ob Sie bleiben können oder zurück müssen.
Awad: (Turning away): I was imprisoned for three months, placed with other asylum seekers. Some of them were terrible people. They hated me. (He holds out his arm). These bruises may fade but my memories cannot.
Awad: (dreht sich weg) Ich war für drei Monate im Gefängnis, zusammen mit anderen Asylsuchenden. Einige von ihnen waren furchtbare Menschen. Sie haben mich gehasst. (Er zeigt seinen Arm). Diese Narben verblassen, aber meine Erinnerungen nicht!
Judge: If the applicant returns to Kenya, I understand that his life is at risk. Therefore, we are willing to grant asylum.
Richter: Wenn der Antragsteller nach Kenia zurückkehrt, ist sein sein Leben in Gefahr. Deswegen bewilligen wir seinen Asylantrag.
Awad smiles and sinks to his knees. He clasps his hands and raises his eyes to the sky. Awad lächelt und sinkt auf die Knie und schaut zum Himmel.
Awad: I was released from my detention and I was able to travel to Barcelona. Here, I made contact with an organisation called ACATHI. They listened to my story and helped me to find shelter.
Awad: Ich wurde aus der Haft entlassen und konnte nach Barcelona reisen. Hier habe ich Kontakt zu der Organisation ACATHI aufgenommen. Sie haben mir zugehört und mir geholfen, eine Unterkunft zu finden.
ACATHI woman: We are able to support the vulnerable and we understand the challenges that LGBTQ+ people must endure in their countries of origin. We can help you.
Mitarbeiterin von ACATHI: Wir unterstützen die Hilfsbedürftigen und wir verstehen die Herausforderungen, mit denen LGBTQ-Menschen konfrontiert sind.
Awad: ACATHI were able to advise me about employment and they helped me find somewhere to live. They treated me like a person and they did not show discrimination or prejudice against me because of my sexuality. In Barcelona, I am able to live freely and proudly as a homosexual man. I am not frightened here.
Awad: ACATHI hat mich bei der Arbeitssuche und Wohnungssuche unterstützt. Sie haben mich ernstgenommen und mich nicht wegen meiner sexuellen Neigungen verurteilt. In Barcelona kann ich frei und stolz als schwuler Mann leben.
ACATHI woman: The Casal de Barri Pou de la Figuera is a public facility managed by the Casc Antic Gestió Comunitària Federation. It is a community hub.

Awad: I feel at home here. My family may have rejected me and this makes me sad. I am hopeful that maybe one day we will be able to re-unite. It may not be possible.
Awad: Hier fühle ich mich zuhause.. Meine Familie hat mich abgelehnt, worüber ich traurig bin. Aber ich hoffe, dass es eines Tages möglich sein wird, wieder zueinander zu finden. Vielleicht gelingt es aber auch nicht.
Awad’s brother shakes his head fiercely behind. Awad’s father is impassive. Awad’s mother holds out her hands towards him but her husband takes her hands and lowers them.
Awads Bruder schüttelt im Hintergrund heftig den Kopf. Awads Vater verharrt unbewegt. Seine Mutter streckt die Hand in seine Richtung aus, aber ihr Mann nimmt ihre Hand und senkt sie.
Awad: My family may have rejected me but Barcelona has welcomed me. Here at the Casal de Barri Pou de la Figuera, I am able to take part in events, I am able to study, I am able to support new initiatives and projects for the LGBTQ+ community and for other sections of society. I am able to belong.
Meine Familie hat mich zurückgewiesen, aber Barcelona hat mich willkommen geheißen. Hier in der Casa de Barri Pou de la Figuera bin ich in der Lage an Veranstaltungen teilzunehmen, ich kann studieren, kann andere Initiativen und Projekte der LGBTQ-Gemeinschaft und andere Bereiche der Gesellschaft unterstützen. Ich gehöre jetzt dazu.
For the first time in my life, I think. I am able to belong. Zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben gehöre ich dazu.
Awad’s boyfriend steps forward. They hold hands. On one side, the ACATHI woman steps forward. On the other, the judge steps forward. Awad’s family leave the stage. His mother continues to weep.
